GREEN-WOOD CEMETERY

A visit to Green-Wood prompts many questions about the cultural history of the cemetery: the landscape, the architecture, monuments and grave markers. Over the course of a century the focus of interpretation was to explore the cultural history — the people who are buried at Green-Wood, the magnificent architecture of the main gates and well-proportioned buildings, the changing style of markers and the enjoyment of a well-manicured lawn.

With its newly acquired status as an arboretum and the awareness that the coming century will bring significant change in the kinds landscapes that will be implemented on the site, a shift in the interpretive focus includes native plantings, sustainable landscape design, biodiversity, regenerative habitats and inspire appreciation and promote understanding for this new aesthetic.

In 2016-2017, Whirlwind did an interpretive master plan for Greenwood and designed and produced a detailed visitor guide with key landscape, architectural and natural history locators. In addition, an APP, Alive at Greenwood, was developed to include a guide to key flora and fauna to the 428 acre cemetery.Outdoor markers featuring 12 different themes were strategically placed on-site.
