DUKE FARMS ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER

DUKE FARMS is a 2700-acre environmental education center in New Jersey supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. When the property was converted from a private estate to a center for land stewardship and sustainability open to the public, Whirlwind was hired to develop a comprehensive design solution to educate the public about environmental stewardship. This included a master plan for interpretation, as well as the design of exhibits, media, and print collateral.

The 22,000 sq. ft. Orientation Center is a LEED platinum converted horse barn where visitors learn about the environmental and cultural history of Duke farms through exhibits and interactive displays. On the grounds, information and directional signs aid visitors as they experience regenerated habitats firsthand. An Eco-kit, print materials and an audio tour are available to enhance the visitor experience.

The exhibits in the Orientation Center were designed and fabricated with LEED certification in mind. Made from white oak harvested within 500 miles of the property, the veneers for the panels were milled from the fewest number of trees from the same forest. The interactive displays get their electricity from the solar array and the screens dim unless they are actively being used.

Collaborations: Center of Urban Restoration Ecology at Rutgers University, headed by Dr. Steven Handel, provided content guidance, research, and writing.
